USA Team for Aachen CDIO Nations Cup

LEXINGTON, Kentucky, June 27–The United States team for the CDIO Nations Cup at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany, was announced by the U.S. Equestrian Federation Monday and includes two Olympians, a Pan American Games gold medalist and a World Equestrian Games team member.

The team consists of Steffen Peters and Ravel, Gunter Seidel and U II, Jan Ebeling and Rafalca and Todd Flettrich and Otto. Steffen, Günter and Jan were born in Germany but are longtime American citizens living in Southern California–Steffen in San Diego, Günter in nearby Cardiff and Jan in Moorpark, north of Los Angeles. Todd is based in Wellington, Florida.

The CDIO starts with the Grand Prix on Thursday, July 14 and nine teams have entered–=Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Great Britain, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden and the U.S. Individual riders have entered from Austria, Canada, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland.

Steffen and Ravel swept the CDIO at Aachen in 2009, the first American combination to win the Grand Prix, the Special and the Freestyle, and went on to win two individual bronze medals at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky last year. Ravel is a 13-year-old KWPN gelding by Contango and owned by Akiko Yamazaki.

Günter Seidel, a three-time Olympian for the U.S., and U II won the Freestyle at Fritzens, Austria on Sunday. His previous European competition was at the WEG in Aachen in 2006 when the U.S. team that also included Steffen won bronze. U II is a 10-year-old KWPN gelding by Jazz and owned by Jane and Dick Brown.

Jan Ebeling led the U.S. team to a gold medal at the 2003 Pan American Games and he and Rafalca were selected as alternates for the 2010 WEG team. He has competed extensively in Europe in the past two years, including the World Cup Final in Leipzig, Germany, in April. Rafalca is a 14-year-old Oldenburg mare by Argentinius owned by Ann Romney, Beth Meyer and Amy Ebeling.

Todd Fettrich will ride Otto on whom he competed as a member of the U.S. WEG team in Kentucky last year. Otto is a 15-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding owned by Cherry Knoll Farm.
